CSCI 7818-3: Topics in Software Engineering
Fall 2001

The World Wide Web has met its design goals of becoming a global information system. Indeed, as of May 2001, information on the Web is being hosted by approximately 29 million websites (<http://www.netcraft.com/survey/>). However, the original architecture of the Web has gone essentially unchanged since Tim Berners-Lee first started work on the Web in 1990. This situation has led to the drive for the "next generation Web," which requires an architecture that can handle the need for new types of information management services, including the ability to associate "semantics" with Web resources.

This seminar will review the state-of-the-art in Web technologies, including the new infrastructure, services, and applications that are beginning to appear that are driving the design of the next-generation Web.

Topics covered by the seminar will include:

• XML and XSLT
• Application Server Architectures, such as Java 2, Enterprise Edition
• RDF and the Semantic Web
• Open Hypermedia
• Web Syndication Systems
• XML-RPC, SOAP, and Web Services
• Weblogs

Additional topics will be selected based on student interests.

Students will work in teams to build a semester project that exploits and/or extends one of the next-generation Web technologies. In addition, students will be evaluated via small homework assignments, class presentations, and class participation.
