Liz Jessup

Associate Professor of Computer Science

Liz received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University in 1989, following a B.A. in Mathematics from Williams College, a brief stint in semiconductor research at GTE Laboratories, and an M.S. in Applied Physics from Yale. She joined the Computer Science faculty at CU Boulder in 1989, then spent the 1990-91 academic year in residence at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as the Alston S. Householder Fellow in Scientific Computing. Her research concerns efficient computational algorithms for matrix algebra which means figuring out how to do matrix-based mathematics on different kinds of computer architectures.

Liz is very interested in undergraduate education and has been involved in developing several new undergrad courses including the high-performance scientific computing series, a course in linear algebra with computer science applications, and, most recently, Technology for the Community.

She occupies herself with, among many other things, area and backcountry telemark skiing in the winter and whitewater kayaking in the summer. The latter accounts for the wet hair and kayak in the above photo.

Roz Dauber

Associate Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication
Producer, Director

Prior to becoming a filmmaker, Roz was a science policy analyst for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, specializing in science and technology for development. In that position, she published The Impact Of Technological Change on Women In Developing Countries. She has since gone on to produce documentaries on indigenous people: Andean Women In Peru, Menri Monastery, and Broken Rainbow, the Academy-Award winning film on the Navajo-Hopi land dispute. She has served as a consultant evaluating women and development projects and educational multimedia projects.

She has an M.A. in Science, Technology and Public Policy from George Washington University and an M.A in Communications Management from the Annenberg School for Communications at USC. Currently Roz teaches documentary film and new media at the University of Colorado where she founded the Tibetan Bonpo Media Archive Project. She just finished a one hour documentary on Tibetan women refugees.

Roz enjoys daily excursions to ponds with her chow-mix, sailing, travelling, reading and watching films.

Clayton Lewis

Professor of Computer Science
Chair of Computer Science

Clayton received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1978, having previously earned B.A. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Princeton and MIT. He was a research staff member and manager of human factors at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center from 1978 to 1984. He also served as group leader (Software Human Factors) for IBM United Kingdom Laboratories in 1982. In 1984, he returned to academics in the Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado at Boulder.Dr. Lewis' honors include the University of Colorado President's Teaching Scholar award in 1989. In 1999 he was elected Chair of the department, and he is having a great time in the job.

Dr. Lewis' research has concentrated on reducing the effort required to learn to use computing systems, and especially programming systems. His work has contributed to the development of widely-used user interface evaluation methods, including the thinking-aloud method and the cognitive walkthrough used in the Technology for the Community course.

Clayton's interests include reading, trying to keep up with his children in physical pursuits like mountain biking and tennis, devising learning activities for kids, and making things out of wood.

Kris Baker

Freshman
Computer Science Major

Kris was born and raised in Rhode Island and has come to Colorado for college. She is a graduate of Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, RI. She has two younger sisters and two cats in RI. She likes to play soccer, softball, and most any other sport you can think of. Kris also likes to surf the net and has an amazing song collection on her computer. She plans to graduate with a computer science degree and work at a small business as a programmer.

Ellen Hardy

Freshman
Chemical Engineering Major

Ellen moved to Boulder in August from a small town never dreaming that she could learn so much. As her first year at a university comes to a close, she is confident that she has chosen the right major, met people with my same interests and values, and developed an unusual routine to accommodate a heavy work load with a desire to explore all that Boulder has to offer. She enrolled in the Technology in the Community course primarily to fill her engineering elective requirement, but, more than anything, she would say this course has enlightened her to the potential technology harbors for small organizations. She would like to participate in programs similar to this course in the future. She has also been active in the community by volunteering at the University Hill Elementary School's P.E. class and by working part time until recently at Great Clips. Ellen is from Grand Junction, Colorado and graduated from Grand Junction High School.

Lindsay Barczuk

Senior
Communication Major
German Minor
Technology, Arts, and Media Certificate

Lindsay hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and she graduated from Upper St. Clair High School in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. After moving from Pennsylvania, it didn't take much time for her to adjust to life in Boulder. Over the past four years, she has enjoyed her time by skiing, snowboarding, and cooking. After graduating in May, Lindsay is will likely stay in the Denver area, ideally working as a consultant for a new media firm.

Sarah Roberts

She attended the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio until 1999 and is currently a Feminist Studies/Psychology double major at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Sarah enjoys skiing, hiking, climbing and camping with her friends and her dog during her free time. Aside from being a student, she is an activist, committed to environmental sustainability and women's issues. Prior to her involvement with IWT, she has worked with communities in Denver, Texas, Mexico and Nicaragua around issues of health and sustainable housing and has also participated in a permaculture project on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. She plans to spend the upcoming fall and spring semesters studying and working in New Zealand and Nepal. Ultimately, Sarah would like to pursue a career in social change at the international level.

Phil Weinstein

Post-bachelor's nonmatriculated student
http://indra.com/~philw/devcenter/

Phil Weinstein is a software engineer with the Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES) at UCB. He says that he never quite understood why his employers over the last five years were always eager to equip his development workstation with a web browser and unlimited high speed Internet access. His life changed (a little) the day he discovered that he could compose HTML with his browser. He now publishes simple websites for several community organizations, including Colorado and Boulder AAUW.
