After receiving a BS in Electrical Engineering from Beijing Polytechnic University in 1982, Xiaodong came to the University of Colorado in 1983, spending his first two years working with Ralph Slutz at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) on scientific databases. After receiving an MS in Computer Science in 1985, Zhang entered the Computer Science PhD program in parallel computing under the supervision of Professors Robert (Bobby) Schnabel and Richard Byrd. He received a PhD in Computer Science in 1989.

Zhang's research interests cover a wide spectrum in the areas of high performance and distributed systems. Several technical innovations and research results from his team have been adopted or are being developed in commercial products and open source systems with direct impacts to our daily computing operations. Xiaodong has served as the Program Director of Advanced Computational Research at the National Science Foundation, was associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and is currently serving on the Editorial Boards of IEEE Transactions on Computers and IEEE Micro. He is also an organizer and a lecturer of the Dragon Star Lecture Program, which offers advanced computer science research classes in many Chinese universities for thousands of talented graduate students every year.

Xiaodong says he "considers Boulder as my second hometown, where I received a first-class graduate education, was cared for and guided by my three advisors, and made many friends." He begins his new position in January 2006.
