Department of Computer Science graduate Xiaodong Zhang (PhD 1989) has recently been elevated to IEEE Fellow. The grade of Fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the profession and is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The accomplishments that are honored have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, bringing the realization of significant value to society. The IEEE looks to the Fellows for guidance and leadership as the world of electrical and electronic technology continues to evolve. Zhang's elevation to IEEE Fellow was "for contributions to computer memory systems".

Zhang's research interests cover a wide spectrum in the areas of high performance and distributed systems. A common thread among his research projects focuses on fast data accesses and resource sharing with cost- and energy-efficient management at different levels of the memory and storage hierarchies in computer, distributed, and Internet systems. Several technical innovations and research results from his team have been adopted or are being developed in commercial products and open source systems with direct impacts to our daily computing operations.

Xiaodong has served as the Program Director of Advanced Computational Research at the National Science Foundation. He is the associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, and is also serving on the Editorial Boards of IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Micro, and Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. He is an organizer and a lecturer of the Dragon Star Lecture Program, offering advanced research classes in computer science and engineering in many Chinese universities for thousands of talented graduate students and young faculty every year.

Zhang is currently the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Ohio State University. He also holds an endowed chair professorship, the Robert M. Critchfield Professor in Engineering.
