Wagle Awarded Amelia Earhart Fellowship

July 2010

Graduate student Neeti Wagle was recently awarded a Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship. Established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing PhD/doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship of $10,000, awarded to 35 Fellows around the globe each year, may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

In her research, Wagle is working with Assistant Professor Eric Frew from the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department on developing intelligent algorithms for unmanned aerial system (UAS) control. Specifically she is interested in employing machine learning techniques for unmanned aircraft based localization and mapping. She is currently working on using radio frequency (RF) signals to localize unknown radio sources in unexplored environments. Because of the large number of pervasive mobile RF devices this work is significant not only to the robotics problems of target tracking and search-and-rescue but also to a broader range of applications like location-awareness.
