March 2011

The Computer Science website ( was recently named a CU Web Design Award Winner by the University of Colorado Universal Design and Accessibility Committee. The Computer Science website tied for 5th place in the competition, in which 42 websites from the Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs campuses were judged.

Sites were judged on four criteria:

Computer Science Department Website

Can people with disabilities use the website?

How well can users achieve their goals and how satisfied are they with that process?

Universal Design

Is the website designed to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

Web Standards

Does the website follow web standards in using newer structural markup languages such as HTML 4.0, XHTML 1.1 and HTML 5.0; CSS formatting; object modules like the W3C DOM; and scripting languages like JavaScript to create web pages which are structured, semantic and with content separated from presentation?

Department webmaster Bruce Sanders accepted the award at the Web Design Awards and Training Day, which was held March 30, 2011 on the Boulder campus. The Universal Design and Accessibility Committee educates the CU-Boulder campus on the benefits of Universal Design in the area of electronic communications and information technology.
