Lab for Experimentation with Wireless Systems

November 2000

Small, communicating computers are rapidly emerging as a fundamental part of the international information infrastructure. As the first step in a major research thrust, the Department of Computer Science has launched the Digital CommonSpace effort to explore and discover technology for studying symbiotic computing in the Internet. The SCC Application Laboratory Environment (SCALE) is a hands-on experimental laboratory in which students focus on the spectrum of software for SCCs -- their operating systems, network protocols, devices, middleware, development environments, applications, and user interfaces.

SCALE is a physical laboratory and a mechanism for supporting exploration, prototyping, and the creation of leading edge demonstration systems. The physical laboratory is hosted by the Department of Computer Science; the infrastructure equipment is provided by the Digital CommonSpace grant; individual project work (student remuneration and project-specific equipment) is supported by project sponsors.

Students using SCALE are initially being supported by the College of Engineering and Applied Science Engineering Excellence Fund. Microsoft has supported the predecessor work for SCALE, and Inktomi has proposed projects for student consideration.
