Osborne Receives CU@Lunch Award

April 2002

Professor Richard Osborne was recently selected as a Building Community Campaign's CU@Lunch appreciation award recipient. He was nominated by student Kent Polkinghorne, who submitted an essay describing how Rick helped to improve the sense of community for Kent on the Boulder campus.

The Building Community Campaign committee believes that a sense of community is often built one person at a time. The CU@Lunch appreciation award provides an opportunity for CU-Boulder students to invite a faculty member or staff person to lunch as a way of expressing appreciation for support.

Here are some of the things that Kent told the committee about Rick's supportive efforts:

"Rick is the best professor that I've had at CU. I've heard others describe him as a type of gym teacher who teaches computer science. His constant enthusiasm for what he teaches and for everything else in life help me want to be in school. He doesn't make himself out to be on a pedestal above his students, and takes our sarcastic comments very well."

As a Building Community initiative, CU@Lunch is a way for students to connect with faculty and staff, and to develop ties between the concept of community and active involvement with community members. As CU@Lunch award winners, Rick and Kent will receive a free lunch for two at the University Club and a certificate of appreciation.
