July 2001

Congratulations to Professor Harold (Hal) Gabow, newly elected Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Algorithms and Computational Theory (SIGACT).

As a member of the SIGACT Executive Committee, Professor Gabow has been involved in many of the recent SIGACT accomplishments, such as:

  • organizing the first internationally located STOC, held this summer
  • starting SIGACT-sponsored conference awards
  • increasing financial support for student attendance at STOC
  • making past and current sponsored-conference proceedings available through the ACM Digital Library

Professor Gabow's active involvement in SIGACT has allowed him to develop a strong understanding of the issues important to the theory community. As Chair, he will work on increasing SIGACT's voice on such timely issues as: electronic publication, authors' website rights, pricing of journals, and integrating Internet resources for theory. He will also work on increasing membership enrollment and liberalizing "the new conference award policy to make it easier for conferences to fund awards."

The Association for Computing Machinery was founded in 1947 and is the world's first educational and scientific computing society.
