August 1999

Amer Diwan will join the Department of Computer Science as an Assistant Professor in August this year. Amer received his PhD in Computer Science in 1996 at the University of Massachusetts.

In November 1996 he joined Stanford University's SUIF Compiler Group, where he was an Engineering Research Associate. His research topics have been in compiler optimizations and programming tools for modern programming languages, computer architecture, and garbage collection. Amer has designed, implemented, and evaluated a novel scheme to allow fully accurate garbage collection without hindering compiler optimizations. He has shown that garbage collection and aggressive compiler optimizations can co-exist without degrading the performance or effectiveness of either. His techniques have been incorporated by others into compilers for SML/NJ and Java. His most recent research focuses on techniques for using aggressive compiler analyses for software engineering tools.
