Diwan Receives 3rd IBM Faculty Partnership Award

June 2004

Amer Diwan has received the IBM Faculty Partnership Award for the third year in a row. This is a highly competitive award sponsored by IBM Research for junior faculty. This award includes a gift of $40,000 to support Diwan's research. Amer will be using this award to continue his research into vertical profiling:

Modern applications, such as ones written in Java, run on virtual machines that introduce many layers of abstraction between the application and the underlying hardware. These layers provide many useful services, such as concurrency, garbage collection, exception handling, dynamic-class loading, and just-in-time compilation and optimization.

This layering of software, however, makes it difficult to understand the performance of the overall system: in order to understand the performance one must understand the interactions between the application, the multiple layers of abstraction, and the underlying hardware. The increasing complexity of modern hardware, which now freely employs features such as speculation, further complicates the task of understanding system performance.

To help programmers in understanding (and thus tuning) the performance of modern applications, we will explore a new technique, Vertical Profiling. In a nutshell, vertical profiling collects information from all the layers of abstraction and uses statistical and other techniques to help programmers understand the behavior of modern applications.

This award can be won a maximum of three times.
