Sensor-Based Path Planning Demonstrated at Engineering Sampler

November 2009

Professor Nikolaus Correll demonstrated Sensor-Based Path Planning at the College of Engineering and Applied Science "Engineering Sampler" held recently in the Engineering Center:

Three robots equipped with a laser scanner, positioning system, and camera where roaming the Correll Lab space and sending the map they build to three supervisor computers. The computers also displayed a video stream from the robots. Students then had the opportunity to interact with the system on any of the three computers, had their parents move in front of the laser scanner and saw them show up as black dots on the map ... or just use the robot to remotely explore the building by clicking on the map or using the cursor keys. Technical concepts covered included

  • probabilistic maps -- any time the laser hits something belief about an obstacle there is increased

  • path planning -- how to find the path through the environment that has the least likeliest obstacles

  • wireless networking -- the quality of the video stream changed drastically with so many people moving around

The Engineering Sampler is a recruiting event held by the College each Fall, drawing high school students and their parents to the University of Colorado at Boulder. Recruiting great students from Colorado and across the country is a top priority of the College and of the Department of Computer Science. This year, the event hosted approximately 650 prospective students and their parents.
