Burton Receives Boren Scholarship

June 2009

Jacob Burton has earned the prestigious Boren Scholarship, offered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) through their National Security Education Program (NSEP). The highly competitive, national scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and relevance of the student's academic and professional pursuits to the international interests of the United States.

The scholarship provides Burton a full expense paid trip to Washington, DC in mid-June where he will be kept in the Liaison on Capitol Hill while attending a convocation that will include meetings with Senators and Members of the House.

Boren will also provide $20,000 for Burton to study in a program based out of Muscat, Oman during the 2009-2010 academic year. After graduation, the United States government will hold Burton to a service requirement in some international agency. This commitment may be fulfilled through agencies such as the Peace Corps and the State Department, or by using his Computer Science degree to serve in the NSA or other national security positions.

Burton is a double major in Computer Science and International Affairs with a focus in the Middle East.
